当地时间2月29日上午，美国华盛顿州宣布一例新冠肺炎死亡的病例，这是该州也是全美首个死亡病例。美国媒体表示，值得注意的是，死者没有前往疫区的旅行记录。
下午，美国总统特朗普与副总统彭斯及美国疾控中心官员等一同出席发布会，通报美国新冠肺炎疫情最新情况及防控措施。发布会上，特朗普表示，去世的人是一位50多岁女性，高危患者。并补充说，“她是一个伟大的女性。”
Trump， at a press conference at the White House， described the victim was“a medically high-risk patient in her late 50s，” adding that she was“a wonderful woman。”
随后，美国媒体紧急通报，确认首个死亡病例是男性，并非女性。
《国会山报》报道称，美国疾控中心（CDC）搞混了性别，将第一例死亡病例错称为了女性。这直接导致了，总统下午发布会上的信息也出现了错误。
经官方证实，美国首例死于新型冠状病毒的病例是华盛顿州的一名男性。

美国疾控中心主任罗伯特·雷德菲尔德在推特上更正称：早前向特朗普和副总统彭斯汇报时，误将死者认定为女性。
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention“erroneously identified the patient as female，” its director，Robert Redfield， said on Twitter。
华盛顿州州长杰伊·英斯利确认此人为男性。西雅图和金郡的公共卫生官员也表示，死者是柯克兰常青医疗中心的一名男性患者。
The state’s governor， Jay Inslee， had earlier identified the person as a man。 The officer of public health for Seattle and King County said the fatality was a male patient at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland。
